The LDS Church says ‘goodbye’ to (a part of) the Boy Scouts

In what was sad but not necessarily unexpected news the LDS Church announced today that beginning January 1, 2018, they will no longer be using the Boy Scouts’ Varsity and Venturing programs for their youth activities. Initial thoughts – It’s just scouting for the 14-18-year-old young men that’s being dropped. Cub scouts and 11-13-year-old scouts are still around for the time being, though replacements for those are in the works as well. The change will take effect next January, but if older boys still want to work towards the Eagle…

Evan McMullin hysteria

Evan McMullin has come out of nowhere to lead the presidential polls in Utah and now we’re seeing the beginnings of a weirdly furious backlash. My facebook feed started filling up with so-called exposes of McMullin over the last couple of weeks and I finally got around to reading them. Spoiler Alert – they’re crap. Seriously, with headlines blaring pretty major accusations I figured someone had dug up something nefarious in McMullin’s past or some terrible policy position he holds. So when I read these posts I was terribly confused.…

Doug Owens Probably Doesn’t Want You To Know…

Doug Owens is a government shut down artist. Or at least was, when the cause meant enough to him. And it cost Utah millions. But first, the back story. Mia Love and Doug Owens had their third and final debate of the campaign on Thursday. My initial thoughts from listening to the debate – Owens tries really, really hard to paint Mia as a partisan extremist and himself as this bipartisan, moderate problem solver. It was by far the most fiery of their interactions to date, with Mia sounding more…

The Attack on Religious Expression [Hub Debate]

Some would have us believe that war is peace, ignorance is strength, and the best way to protect religious liberty is by chasing religious expression out of the public square entirely. Which is obviously complete balderdash. And yet, that’s the argument being made. Religious values have a long and positive role in Western society. John Adams famously said, [W]e have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a…

Doug Owens Strikes Moderate Utah Pose, But Policies Don’t Add Up

The HubCap Spin | Love or Owens: Who Wins the Race for Congressional District 4?

To hear 4th District democratic candidate Doug Owens tell it, he’s an aw shucks down home every day average Utahn running for Congress. But what do you find when you dig a little deeper than campaign marketing? While his website is long on “sixth generation Utahn,” it is remarkably short on specifics, particularly from a candidate whose messaging says he’s running a substantive, solutions based campaign. But let’s take a look under the hood and see how Owens’s actual policies square with that of the general Utah public. Owens portrays…

Why The Ghostbusters Must Be Stopped

Who are the Ghostbusters? Living Ayn Randian archetypes using their own genius to create a new technology to save humankind? Or living proof that capitalism destroys and only government can save us? Read Ted & Annette Fleming’s scathing expose on the Ghostbusters’ tactics and wonder no more.  The Flemings reveal these so-called “parapsychologists” for the hustlers they are. Ghostbusters’ founders, Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, and Egon Spengler, are barely scientists backed by dubious credentials. The purpose of science is to serve mankind, but these men seem to see science as…

The False Choice of Mayberry or Militarization [Hub Debate]

I saw this meme in a couple of social media places this week and it struck a chord with me. Look, I enjoyed The Andy Griffith Show as much as the next bored-on-summer-break elementary school kid, but if you want to know why we don’t have more Sheriff Taylors it’s because Mayberry doesn’t actually exist. There are bad people in the world, and sometimes police officers need guns.

UTA’s $2 Billion Debt Means Higher Sales Taxes On The Way

The Utah Transit Authority is a sort of government agency which is mostly funded by taxpayers. It gets some federal government grant money, has some fare revenue, and charges a bit to advertise on its buses and trains. But by far the bulk of its revenue comes from state sales taxes. And it’s asking for more. A few years ago UTA made the decision to go all in on FrontRunner and Trax lines. They scaled back bus routes and piled money into building train infrastructure. And they racked up $2…

Responding to Questions About Gay Marriage Advocates Coming Out Of The Closet

My piece on gay marriage advocates outing the nature of gay relationships brought quite a reaction. However, I think the reflexive defensiveness missed the main points of the article. The responses to the article can be summed up in the following points: – This is a lie pushed by religious fanatic bigots! – Maybe it’s true, but who cares? Straight partners cheat too. – Maybe it’s true, but who cares? How do open marriages subvert marriage? This first response completely ignores what was actually written. This isn’t some fanatic, hater,…

It’s Now Safe For Gay Marriage Activists To Come Out Of The Closet

Back in 2006, I came across an article by Stanley Kurtz titled, “Zombie Killers”. In it, Kurtz uses statements from cutting edge social scientists and gay marriage activists and shows how they were saying the same thing about the effect of gay marriage on traditional marriage that its defenders were saying and had been doing so for years. Phrases like,“the queering of the social calls into question the normativity and naturalness of both heterosexuality and heterorelationality” are just academic speech for “gay marriage undermines marriage”. It was a fantastic way of pulling…
