The vanity of dictators

“Democracy is beautiful in theory. In practice, it is a fallacy.” — Benito Mussolini You could feel the love. Watching American President Donald Trump sitting next to Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, it was easy to see that these were two like-minded men. It was like two frat brothers reuniting 25 years after college graduation to rehash all their terroristic campus exploits in a wave of sociopathic nostalgia. There they were in a bizarre hand clutch during a group photograph of Asian leaders with the American president. There was Trump offering…

Clinton Book Blathering

“Hillary Clinton is like O.J. looking for the real killers.” – Mark Steyn on Fox News Will Hillary Clinton ever just go away? It was not enough that she stole the nomination for the Democratic Party and then proceeded to fumble the election in a most historically incompetent manner. It is not enough that a blustery real estate developer from New York with no political experience smoked her in the Electoral College. Just like an inexperienced and relatively unknown Senator from Illinois crushed her in the primaries in 2008. In…

Meet the candidates for CD3: Keith Kuder

by John Mulholland This is the sixth in a series of profiles on candidates for the 3rd Congressional District, which is expected to be vacant when Congressman Jason Chaffetz resigns his office at the end of June. Previous profiles include Brad Daw, Shayne Row, Paul Fife, Margaret Dayton, and Stewart Peay. Keith has experience volunteering for Jason Chaffetz’s campaign and works in emergency roadside assistance advocate. Keith has been arrested several times but has gone through law enforcement process and the cases were eventually dropped. Keith mentioned how he has…

President Pence

Fearless predictions: Mike Pence will be the 46th President of the United States. Mike Pence will become the 46th President of the United States before January 20th, 2021. How is that for putting myself out there? My reasoning behind these predictions is fairly easy to digest. In the two months that he has been President of the United States, Donald J. Trump has shown a disturbing constancy of ineptitude. He has exuded a level of mental instability that disqualifies him from serious consideration as a statesman. He has embarrassed this…

It’s his character, Stupid!

In 1975, then-amateur boxer Michael Dokes told Sports Illustrated that his hand speed was so fast that you couldn’t catch them on camera. And then the 17-year-old proffered this warning to boxing legend Muhammad Ali, “I’m going to get you old man, so you better get out while you can.” Two years later, now pro-boxer Michael Dokes faced off against the aging Champ (Ali was then 35 years old, overweight and on the downside of his career). It was a three-round exhibition fight. Ali was up to his old tricks…

Why Trump will be re-elected

About a year ago I wrote in this space that the rise of Donald Trump was an expression of revolt against the bien-pensants, that class of individuals who know so much better than we do what is good for us. Trump’s election was the culmination of that revolt. The failure of the bien-pensants to understand the revolt, as marked by their continued attack on Trump for believing the way the hoi polloi do and (or at least) speaking their language, simply validates his message, and will likely lead to his…

Seeds of discontent

“Anything that Hillary accuses Trump of doing, you know that is what she is doing. That is how the left works, how she works. It is right out of the Saul Alinsky playbook. Everything they are doing they accuse you.” – Former Clinton Insider Larry Nichols in an interview with Alex Jones, September 2016. Barely a month into the Trump administration and anything to do with Trump’s agenda is under attack from all sides. A combination of RINO Republicans, virtually all Democrats, and the mainstream media combine and conspire to…

Paid protestors? No. Professionally organized ones? Absolutely.

Jason Chaffetz had a pretty bad time at his last town hall in Cottonwood Heights. The raucous crowd barely let him respond to questions, constantly booed, and made national headlines for it. Chaffetz later claimed that the event was packed with paid protesters, something that provoked immediate ire because of the apparent ridiculousness of the statement. And yet, it seems there’s a kernel of truth behind the accusation. You see, these protesters weren’t paid, but they sure do seem to have a lot of paid organizers directing them. The lead…

Lots of booing at Chaffetz town hall

Jason Chaffetz held a town hall in Salt Lake County, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the results meant he never does so again. Democratic organizers did a better job of getting their people out than Chaffetz did. (If he’s still a Congressman in 2020, this might inspire him to try to gerrymander more of SLC out of his district.) I arrived around 5:50 for the planned 7:00 event. Several hundred people were already there at Brighton High School. The auditorium had a capacity between 1000-1100, which meant that people…

I don’t trust Trump

Two years ago I looked at 2016 as the most winnable election for Republicans in a generation. Why? Because I knew the Democrats would nominate Hillary Clinton and that her message of “it’s my turn” wouldn’t resonate. It felt like an embarrassment of riches to have all of these qualified governors, senators, and so forth putting their names forward. (“What a deep bench!”) Some of it was also just an embarrassment. Too many people ran. Half of them ran for the publicity, like they were auditioning for a future Fox…
