BUZZ: Sutherland Institute announces Boyd Matheson as new president

In a press release, the Sutherland Institute announced that Boyd Matheson as its new president. The conservative public policy think tank, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been without a permanent president since it parted ways with Paul Mero in August of 2014. Matheson is well-known in Utah politics, including for his service as Utah Senator Mike Lee’s Chief of Staff, a position he held from 2013 until 2015, when he stepped down to work on Lee’s reelection campaign. Lieutenant Gov’s office responds to SB 54 questions from Sen. Todd Weiler

It’s been a busy week for the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office. On Friday, Mark Thomas, the LG’s Chief Deputy, responded to a series of SB 54 related questions from Utah State Senator Todd Weiler. Thomas’ letter spells out a legal line of reasoning at odds with the Utah Republican Party’s arguments that Judge David Nuffer’s decision guts SB 54. Find the letter below. Utah LG Spencer Cox extends olive branch to GOP Chair James Evans, explains state’s SB 54 legal position

Can a soft answer turn away wrath? In a letter yesterday, Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox responded to a letter from Utah Republican Party Chair James Evans with an apology and an explanation of the state’s legal position on SB 54 issues. In the letter to Cox, sent earlier this month, Evans requested that the LG’s office identify differences of opinion regarding the application of SB 54. The exchange of letters comes in the wake of a court decision allowing the Republican Party to close the Primary to unaffiliated voters.…

Kathleen Bailey, a former Wall Street analyst and investment manager, has entered the race for Utah State Treasurer. Bailey is the fifth to enter the race to replace current Utah State Treasurer, Richard Ellis, who stepped down, effective November 1, to take a position with the state’s non-profit college savings program.  Merrill Cook, Neil Walter, Phil Conder, and David Damschen have previously announced their candidacies for the office. Merrill Cook has entered the race for Utah State Treasurer, the Utah Republican Party confirmed to Utah Politico Hub on Friday. The former Congressman is the fourth to enter the race to replace current Utah State Treasurer, Richard Ellis, who stepped down, effective November 1, to take a position with the state’s non-profit college savings program.  Neil Walter, Phil Conder, and David Damschen have previously announced their candidacies for the office. David Damschen has announced his candidacy for Utah State Treasurer. Damschen has been employed as Chief Deputy State Treasurer for the last seven years. Rep. David Lifferth announces his candidacy for Utah State Senate District 13

In a press release, David Lifferth announced his candidacy for Utah State Senate District 13. Lifferth has represented  Utah House District 2 since 2013. Senate District 13, which includes Lehi, parts of Bluffdale, Herriman, American Fork, Highland, as well as Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain, Cedar Fort and Fairfield, is currently represented by Mark Madsen, who will retire at the end of this year. Phil Conder to run for State Treasurer

In an interview with Utah Politico Hub Wednesday morning, Phil Conder confirmed that he is running for Utah State Treasurer. Richard Ellis will resign from the office in November. Neil Walter of Washington County has also announced he is running for State Treasurer.
