BUZZ: Rod Snow Ends Representation of John Swallow

Utah Attorney General John Swallow resigns

John Swallow’s attorney, Rod Snow, has ended his representation of Swallow, sources say, effectively firing Swallow as a client. Sources assert that Snow ended his representation because of a conflict of interest in representing Marc Sessions Jenson, a former client of Snow.  The change comes just weeks after a search warrant was issued to search Swallow’s home for evidence in connection to the criminal investigation into allegations regarding Swallow’s behavior. While no charges have been filed, sources told Utah Policy charges are expected soon, including against former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff…

BUZZ: Shurtleff a fan of police raids, unless it happens to him

The Washington Post’s Radley Balko took notice to former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff‘s complaints about the recent law-enforcement raid on his house, and he used the opportunity to point out how Shurtleff was a supporter of police raids for other people, committing other crimes. From his book, Balco quotes: In August 2005, more than 90 police officers from several state and local SWAT teams raided 1,500 people at a peaceful, outdoor dance party in Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah. The police were armed with assault weapons, full SWAT attire, police…

Mark Shurtleff also confirms his home is being searched while he is in DC. The rest of the news media is out the door and on their way. UPDATE @ 20:06: Chris Jones…

Global Warming Calisthenics and State Leadership

I recently sat through a luncheon with House Speaker Becky Lockhart. Her usual sharp and witty self, we discussed a number of issues and leadership challenges that face Utah in the future. It was agreed that while there is much we are doing as a state, there is much left to do. Love it or hate it, Utah’s economic future is intrinsically joined with our ability to harvest natural resources, particularly energy resources. With the ever encroaching federal intrusions into states’ rights, particularly in the realm of control of federal…

Who Should Read the John Swallow Report? Everyone.

Utah Attorney General John Swallow resigns

When I was a new attorney (OK, even newer than I am now), I heard a more experienced lawyer say, in response to an internal discussion about an attorney who had just been censured by the Utah Bar, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”  This, of course, referred to the fact that it can be quite easy to be going along, trying to do the right thing, and look up to find that you’ve crossed a technical or ethical line, even if you’ve tried to act with…

John Swallow: Utah’s Most Corrupt Politician Ever?

The full report is out on the misconduct of former Utah Attorney General John Swallow, and it is indeed a web of lies and deceit. It’s interesting because the web extends to former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and U.S. Senators Harry Reid and Mike Lee.  Here’s some highlights taken directly from the first 20 pages of the report: “The Committee’s investigation revealed that, during his tenure in the Office, Mr. Swallow compromised the principles and integrity of the Office to benefit himself and his political supporters. In so doing, Mr. Swallow…

Some Gems from the John Swallow Report, Part 1

Utah Attorney General John Swallow resigns

Just in case you had neither the time of inclination to read the full House Committee Report on its investigation of John Swallow, I thought I’d provide some snippets that I consider, in an unfortunate use of that term, “gems.”  Others will (and have) summarized the conclusions of the report, which aren’t good if your name is John Swallow.  And while most of the story has been summarized and restated ad naseum, but here are a few things that may be new  to you, or at least offer some more details/context on…
