By now I am sure that all of you are aware of the media firestorm resulting from comments I made in Judiciary Committee meeting yesterday regarding Representative Romero’s HB74—Consent Definition for Sexual Offense. I deeply regret that my comments have been taken out of context causing my intentions to be misunderstood, and I am sorry for any embarrassment to this Body that my statements have caused. Please know that I abhor sexual assault under any circumstances, including within a marriage. Currently, under Utah law, sex with an unconscious person without consent…

Dear Delegate: Sorry Not Sorry

A few days before the Utah County Republican Convention, the Republican delegates in Legislative District 57 received a letter from the Foundation for Government Accountability (“FGA”) giving us their honest assessment of the candidates. You know the letter. It lionized Rep. Brian Greene (who eventually won with 69.8% of the vote) and blasted John G. A letter with Foundation for Government Accountability (“FGA”) letterhead received by Republican County Delegates this week has been found to be fraudulent.  The letter purported to be from the…

Dark Money, From the NYT to Utah County

“Dark money” put Utah on the front page of the  New York Times. Calling it a “nightmare scenario,” the Times described “dark money” like this: A candidate colludes with wealthy corporate backers and promises to defend their interests if elected. The companies spend heavily to elect the candidate, but hide the money by funneling it through a nonprofit group. And the main…

The Strangest of Bedfellows

It has been said that politics makes the strangest of bedfellows. Every once in a while during the session the universe seems to tilt. Legislators who are fierce opponents join together for the passage or defeat of a bill. This last week saw Sen. Deidre Henderson and Sen. Jim Dabakis join sides in opposition to a bill related to the NSA center in Bluffdale.  Sometimes it is not just legislators, but lobbies.
