When do issues with political fundraising actually concern Alliance for a Better Utah?

Remember when Alliance for a Better Utah was a fighter for clean, ethical campaign fundraising? A quick look at their own website shows that they’ve spent a lot of bytes going after what they perceive to be campaign financing evils and violations. Heck, they even demanded a quick way to investigate any allegation of violating campaign finance laws. So given that Utah House Democrats stand accused of illegally fundraising at the Capitol, ABU should be all over this one like they were with Mike Lee’s home sale, right? Pfft, as…

Why King’s Campaign Finance Bill is Ironic (and DOA)

On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Brian King’s campaign finance bill hit a snag when the House Government Operations Committee voted unanimously to hold HB60, ostensibly because of concerns about the Swallow scandal. King’s bill would limit donations from individuals to candidates to $10,000 for statewide races and $5,000 for legislative races. “I want to see if there is something we can do to address dark money … in the form of greater disclosure and transparency,” King said according the Salt Lake Tribune. Maryann Martindale, executive director of the progressive non-profit Alliance for a Better Utah (ABU), also spoke…

Money and Politics: Like Water Flowing [Hub Debate]

Money and Politics: recently, Salt Lake Tribune columnist George Pyle wrote that the onus is on voters to choose the leaders of our republic.  Is it the voter’s responsibility to shift through the lies? Or is there a role for government in regulating speech and money in politics? “Get money out of politics.” “Heightened transparency.” “Campaign finance reform.” “Restore strength to our democracy.” Whatever the euphemism, the phrases  amount to one thing: veiled proposals to limit the means, manner, and amounts of spending on political campaigns. Proponents point to the galactic sized…

Shurtleff/Swallow: Let the blame game begin!

Today, the previous two Utah Attorneys General were arrested on charges of corruption, interfering with a witness, obstruction of justice and a variety of campaign reporting violations. Quickly, those who dislike Utah or our system jumped to call for a number of changes to campaign laws or to make political hay out of the situation. Thankfully, the investigation into the Swallow and Shurtleff scandal has been handled well, by the GOP dominated Legislature, a bipartisan effort by the Salt Lake and Davis County District Attorneys and the Utah State Department of Public…
