When do issues with political fundraising actually concern Alliance for a Better Utah?

Remember when Alliance for a Better Utah was a fighter for clean, ethical campaign fundraising? A quick look at their own website shows that they’ve spent a lot of bytes going after what they perceive to be campaign financing evils and violations. Heck, they even demanded a quick way to investigate any allegation of violating campaign finance laws. So given that Utah House Democrats stand accused of illegally fundraising at the Capitol, ABU should be all over this one like they were with Mike Lee’s home sale, right? Pfft, as…

The Mero Moment: Political Fundraising – May 16, 2016

Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” Observing campaign finance policy today, he could just as easily say, “Current campaign finance law is the worst form of electioneering, except for all the others.” The Salt Lake Tribune recently ran stories about a fundraiser that Governor Gary Herbert hosted for his reelection campaign. Buzz: Dana Layton reports no expenditures in the LD60 race

Candidates have started filing their pre-convention disclosure reports and Dana Layton’s seems to have a serious discrepancy. While she lists a balance forward from her previous campaign and a $500 donation from Utah Bankers Association PAC, she doesn’t any expenditures at all. Assuming she had to at least pay a filing fee to run, this would seem to be a completely inaccurate report. This comes after missing the disclosure filing deadline earlier this week. That could raise questions from her challenger, Brad Daw, who was defeated in 2012 following a…
