Trump, Carson still lead ahead of CNBC debate

Donald Trump and Ben Carson, the top two voter-getters in all of the latest polls, decided to strong-arm CNBC into complying to some of their demands in regards to next week’s debate. CNBC dropped the planned three hours, and they will allow opening and closing statements. Since Trump and Carson have so much power, they should have demanded CNBC raise the threshold from 2.5% to 3.5% average. It would have resulted most likely in 6 people in primetime instead of 8-9. If the debate were tomorrow, the order left to…

Evaluating the candidates for President (Part 9): Carly Fiorina

Even as I begin writing this I haven’t decided where I stand on Carly Fiorina. She sounds like a strong candidate when she speaks – I can understand Holly’s enthusiasm based on what Carly says – but I’m not yet convinced of how much substance is behind the rhetoric. I’ve had concerns about her performance at HP because that’s the only real sample we have of her capacity to lead. Carly declares on her campaign website that “her record as CEO speaks for itself” and some of her critics would…

BUZZ: Marco Rubio coming to Utah

On October 19, Marco Rubio will join the ranks of presidential candidates that have visited Utah to raise support and funds for their presidential campaigns. Carly Fiorina, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul and Hillary Clinton have all made campaign stops in Utah this year. According to invitation obtained by Utah Politico Hub, Rubio for President will be participating in a fundraiser on October 19 hosted by Karen and Scott Keller of Davis County. During the 2012 presidential campaign, the Kellers hosted a fundraiser for Mitt Romney. The location of the fundraiser has…

Carly Fiorina is a rock-solid candidate

I love watching Carly Fiorina! Whether she wins the presidency or not (and I hope she does), she is displaying what it means to be a rock-solid candidate, always on message, and as US News and World Report said “unflappable.” I bet her campaign and her messaging will be studied for many election cycles to come – she is THAT GOOD. According to that same US News and World Report article, There’s something distinctly impressive about Carly Fiorina’s rhetorical rhythm that’s persuading voters she’s capable of handling any problem that…

Evaluating the candidates for President (Part 1)

David Miller will present his series of posts evaluating the candidates for president over the coming weeks and months (because there are a lot of them). This is the introduction to the series.  Eight years ago, with two crowded presidential primaries, I did a long series of posts evaluating each candidate for president. I evaluated every candidate I could find, not just those in the two major parties. It was an interesting exercise, although I opted not to do it again in 2012. I wasn’t planning to do it for 2016, either,…

Marco Rubio will be the Republican nominee

This presidential election cycle in many ways feels like a rerun of 2012. Colorful characters who have no chance of winning the Republican nomination are dominating the polls. Candidates who never stood a chance stay in for a quixotic battle for attention. But during 2011-12, we all knew deep down that Mitt Romney was going to be the nominee. What has made 2015-16 more interesting is that there hasn’t been a clear-cut Mitt since Day 1. Now many people acted like Jeb Bush was inevitable. Sure, he’d be in the…

Midday Commentary on Last Night’s News — Sept. 28, 2015

So, you may not know this, but last night’s Blood Moon didn’t actually usher in the Apocalypse. It was just another sign of the existing Apocalypse that has been rolling out slowly for months. I mean, Utah Republicans proposing the full expansion of Obamacare? LDS church leaders dropping like flies? Donald Trump? The Thanksgiving Point I-15 Construction? It’s madness! And it’s right in front of us! Wake up, sheeple! So anyway, for more Apocalyptic fun, here’s Fox 13’s gallery. The blood, it runs red! • In other news, Planned Parenthood…

Donald Trump sliding in latest polls

I love watching the polls. I’m a statistics kind of person. It’s been interesting to watch the movement since we’ve had the second debate and Scott Walker has dropped out. First let’s look at Iowa. Here’s where things stood in Iowa before the CNN debate, averaging the last two polls. 1. Donald Trump – 28% 2. Ben Carson – 23% 3. Ted Cruz – 9.5% 4. Marco Rubio – 5.5% 5. Jeb Bush – 4.5% 5. Carly Fiorina – 4.5% 7. Mike Huckabee – 4% 8. John Kasich – 3.5%…

Was Fiorina telling the truth about abortion?

For me, the only moment of genuine passion and conviction in the entire CNN GOP debate came when Carly Fiorina linked the Iran issue (“the defense of the security of this nation”) with abortion (“the defense of the character of this nation”). Here is what she said: Fiorina has been excoriated in the media for this statement, not least because the debate was the most-watched event for CNN. Planned Parenthood has been in damage-control mode over the ongoing release of undercover videos documenting the sale / donation1 of human organs…
