Doug Owens Strikes Moderate Utah Pose, But Policies Don’t Add Up

The HubCap Spin | Love or Owens: Who Wins the Race for Congressional District 4?

To hear 4th District democratic candidate Doug Owens tell it, he’s an aw shucks down home every day average Utahn running for Congress. But what do you find when you dig a little deeper than campaign marketing? While his website is long on “sixth generation Utahn,” it is remarkably short on specifics, particularly from a candidate whose messaging says he’s running a substantive, solutions based campaign. But let’s take a look under the hood and see how Owens’s actual policies square with that of the general Utah public. Owens portrays…

A Guide to Voting: Resources and Rants

Every year about this time, my phone starts ringing.  Neighbors, friends, family members, all calling to ask how I voted.  This year, I thought, to save you all the call, I’ll walk you through my thought process as I fill out my ballot and give you the resources you need to make your own informed decision. Since I live in Davis County, I received my ballot in the mail.  If you do not have your ballot in hand, and would like to follow along visit: here I both love and…

The Doug Owens – Mia Love Debate: What was the Score Again?

While being a very concerned citizen in terms of politics, I have a confession to make: I hate political debates. I dutifully tuned into the Mia Love, Doug Owens debate last night and admittedly had a hard time finishing the entire hour without reverting my attention to a nice game of Angry Birds on my I-pad. Am I a disinterested Citizen? Typical uninformed voter? Not by a long shot. The problem is simple. In such preliminary campaign debates, no one ever really says anything of weight or importance. No one…

Doug Owens Accused of FEC Violation by Utah GOP

The HubCap Spin | Love or Owens: Who Wins the Race for Congressional District 4?

With his campaign ads just barely hitting the airwaves, Utah Democrat Doug Owens has already solicited controversy. A complaint filed with the FEC by Utah Republican Party Executive Director Julian Babbitt accuses Doug Owens and the Owens for Congress campaign of violating Federal Elections Commission regulations. According to the complaint, those regulations require that the candidate’s approval of the campaign advertisement for at least four seconds, but the advertising only shows his approval for two seconds. The complaint is embedded below. You can find the recently released ads on UtahPolicy.com. Fec Complaint against Doug Owens

The HubCap Spin | Love or Owens: Who Wins the Race for Congressional District 4?

HubCap Spins: Where the Rubber Meets the Road is a collaborative effort of Utah Political Capital (UPC) and Utah Politico Hub (the Hub). One person from each site answers a question about upcoming races, elections, and issues. Last week we looked at the Utah Attorney General race; today we turn to the Fourth Congressional District. Utah’s Fourth Congressional District has been in the spotlight since even before the district was officially drawn. Adding to the interest is the fact that late last year Congressman Jim Matheson announced that he would not seek an eighth term,…

This week’s collection of interesting quotes from the #UTPOL and beyond, ranging from the thought provoking to the jaw dropping, from the dead serious to the just plain hilarious. Did we miss any? Send them to us at UtahPoliticoHub@gmail.com, and we’ll consider them for next week’s edition. This isn’t the poll you’re looking for. “As a general rule, I think it’s always good to be a little bit skeptical of polls that come from campaigns. That is especially true if we don’t have full information about the poll.” — Chris Karpowitz, co-director of…

Does Doug Owens Have a Narrow Path to Victory?

It’s easy for us Republicans to prognosticate Mia Love’s imminent election  to Congress. After a decade of Matheson and numerous futile campaigns to unseat him, we have a nationally popular candidate with a great story and a great campaign team. Victory  appears to be on the horizon. But, as Darth Vader once warned an overconfident Imperial Admiral, it might be worth remembering to not be too proud of what we’ve created. A small band of devoted individuals could still blow everything up. Whether Utah Democrats have that small band of devoted…

Apostate Senator I read the first [Warren Jeffs’ letter] that I got and it said I couldn’t have sex with my wife until further notice,” Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, told FOX 13. “I decided I wasn’t an adherent of the Warren Jeffs clan.…

Confessions of a Campaign Intern: What they don’t tell you (Parade Edition)

As some of you know, I decided to volunteer on a campaign this cycle. I got tired of complaining, and not doing. Beginning at the start of the year, when everyone (except apparently for Luz Robles) was kicking off their campaign, I decided to start finding a candidate I could support, and help. I have had several on my podcast, including Doug Owens (Utah 04) Charles Stormont (AG) and Jennifer Johnson. Jennifer decided not to run, because of some other issues, and the Owens campaign seemed like they were doing…
