Trump Asks China to Interfere in 2020 Election

Donald Trump stood in front of press cameras on the White House lawn and asked Ukraine and China to investigate the Bidens. He claimed he’s doing it as his duty to look into foreign corruption, but he’s only curious about digging up dirt on his political rival and his family. When asked about any other examples of examining corruption that involved US citizens, Trump could not provide any. Since White House press briefings have been permanently canceled, there’s no way for White House reporters to get more details. On the…

The “Say Anything” Ethics of Harry Reid

During the 2012 presidential campaign, Sen. Harry Reid was trotted out by the Democrats as one could appropriately savage Mitt Romney, a fellow Mormon. For one of his attacks, Reid generated weeks of distraction by accusing Romney of not paying his income taxes for ten years. What was his evidence? An anonymous source. Now that Reid’s retiring, Dana Bash asked him about that insubstantial claim he’d made in 2012. What was his response? “Romney didn’t win, did he?” Notice the complete lack of ethical consideration is such an answer. Did…

Senator Mike Lee Accused of Using the Sarah Palin Playbook

Over the weekend, Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) pushed against a bipartisan agreement to close shop Friday, pushing for a vote against Pres. Obama’s executive action on immigration. Only 22 senators voted for it. But with the door open, lame-duck Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will now be able to push through several nominees for votes that previously appeared permanently blocked this year. (Update: like sugeon general Vivek Murthy). The move angered many GOP senators, including Orrin Hatch, and was generally seen by them as counterproductive. But The…

Is No Democrat Going to Challenge Harry Reid?

All indications thus far are that the Democratic party is going to keep Harry Reid as the Senate leader and Nancy Pelosi as the House leader. This is a terrific strategy if the Democrats want to stay in the minority. One of the lessons from the midterms, and there were many, is that Democratic voters didn’t have a reason to be enthused. Their turnout was low. Republicans meanwhile were greatly enthused by the prospect of keeping the House, taking the Senate, and finally forcing some bills to make it to…

Why this Democrat wants the GOP to win in November.

People frequently ask me why I affiliated on my voter registration with the Utah Democratic party. They seem blown away when I explain Utah’s convention/caucus system and that the only way to fully participate in Utah politics is to affiliate officially with a party. And, frankly, the Utah Republicans wouldn’t have me, so it was easier to align with the Democratic party where I am a delegate and a member of several different groups within the party. As many people know, I am also an intern (through the Hinckley Institute of…

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics…and, Now Lawsuits

My initial reaction to a congressional lawsuit of the president was negative.  To me it was just so much nonsense. With Speaker John Boehner and his pied piper followers come a high level of suspicion about motive.  However, when I watched the President’s rude, childish, and disrespectful response I acquiesced to give the whole thing another look-see.  I don’t think my mind has changed, but something has been solidified.

John Swallow: Utah’s Most Corrupt Politician Ever?

The full report is out on the misconduct of former Utah Attorney General John Swallow, and it is indeed a web of lies and deceit. It’s interesting because the web extends to former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and U.S. Senators Harry Reid and Mike Lee.  Here’s some highlights taken directly from the first 20 pages of the report: “The Committee’s investigation revealed that, during his tenure in the Office, Mr. Swallow compromised the principles and integrity of the Office to benefit himself and his political supporters. In so doing, Mr. Swallow…
