My endorsements in Iron County Republican primaries: Bleak and Hendricks for Commission, Dotson for Attorney, Anderson for Sheriff

In the month leading up to the Iron County Republican Convention, I’ve had the pleasure and duty to meet the various candidates for county offices in the capacity of a county delegate. With the convention completed on Saturday, now comes the time for all registered Republicans to determine who is both best suited to the job and will best represent the party. In this heavily Republican area, the party nominee is all but guaranteed to win in the general election making this decision all the more important. To that end,…

Got a good business idea? Parowan will sell you the building for a dollar

If you’ve got a good idea for a business and wouldn’t mind running it 25 minutes north of Cedar City, Parowan has a deal for you. After the owners of the building decided that they no longer wanted to deal with the upkeep and taxes, they donated a small commercial space at 17 N Main St to the city. An economic development committee decided the best way to handle it is to offer it to the person with the best business idea at McDonald’s value menu pricing. This is very…

Cedar City’s Recycling Conundrum Mirrors Other Small Cities

One of the things I miss the most from living in a larger urban area is curbside recycling. Salt Lake County has a pretty great system. You get two full-sized bins at no extra charge (though you have to ask for the second one), there’s no presort requirement, they take everything but glass, and they get picked up weekly on the same day as your trash. We’d often fill up both bins before our trash was half full. (Full disclosure: we’re kind of Amazon junkies, so most of our load…

Utah Democrats don’t want to win

It was a little jarring to review my ballot for Iron County and see so many unopposed races. My state senator didn’t have any opponent. My representative had a third-party opponent which is almost the same thing. Aside from a couple of write-in candidates (neither of whom broke 20%), all of the county races were unopposed. After having to make a lot of careful choices and analysis from living in major metro areas like Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, it didn’t sit well with me to have so few…

I love the Wasatch Front, but I have to leave it

I love the Salt Lake City area. When my wife and I got married, we were living in different cities, Sacramento and Las Vegas, respectively. We decided to relocate to Salt Lake City to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the vibrant community, and the number of friends and family we had in the area. Over nine years later, I still love it, but I have to leave it.

He Who Is Without Sin: GOP Chair Asks Iron County Chair to Resign

In a letter, Utah Republican Party Chair James Evans has called on  Republican County Chair and legislative candidate Blake Cozzens to resign from his party position to avoid conflict of interest. Under the Iron County Republican Party bylaws cited by Evans, the county party chair is restricted from endorsing any candidate for office until after a candidate has garnered the party’s nomination (find a screen shot of the letter below). Within moments of posting the letter to the Utah Republican Party’s UnOfficial Page, a spirited debate broke out in the online…
