Rob Anderson elected as new Utah GOP Chair

The Utah GOP Convention was held at the Southtown Expo Center last Saturday. It’s an exciting time, not only because the party officers are up for election, but there’s jockeying for position for hopefuls vying for the soon-to-be-vacant seat of Jason Chaffetz. The usual signs and T-shirts blanketing the place. I was able to listen to each candidate for Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary, not to mention the CD3 possibles in Deidre Henderson, Brad Daw, and Margaret Dayton. I know other people have joined, but these three feel like the real race.…

Who calls for James Evans to resign but not Justin Miller? Alliance for a Better Utah, that’s who.

You’d think that a bad time to engage in blatant hypocrisy would be right after you’ve been called out on it. Apparently, Alliance for a Better Utah just enjoys doing things differently. After the complete disaster that was Utah Republican Party State Chair James Evans embarrassing himself, the GOP, and the state of Utah on national TV with widely discredited tabloid conspiracy theories was enough for Better Utah to start demanding his resignation. To me, it’s just another cherry on top of the crap sundae of reasons why Evans has…

The Utah Republican Party’s Nuremburg laws

Utah Republican Party Chairman James Evans sent a letter to State Central Committee members today (reproduced below) saying that they have to review 600,000 voter records to see who is in compliance with the party’s Constitution and Bylaws. This sounds relatively innocuous until you understand what this actually means. If you are one of the a registered Republican, you now have to abide by the Constitution and Bylaws of the party. The vast majority (over 500,000) of registered Republicans haven’t ever attended a caucus or other party meeting, so you probably don’t…

Lieutenant Gov’s office responds to SB 54 questions from Sen. Todd Weiler

It’s been a busy week for the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office. On Friday, Mark Thomas, the LG’s Chief Deputy, responded to a series of SB 54 related questions from Utah State Senator Todd Weiler. Thomas’ letter spells out a legal line of reasoning at odds with the Utah Republican Party’s arguments that Judge David Nuffer’s decision guts SB 54. Find the letter below. Thomas’ letter Friday comes on the heels of LG Spencer Cox’s letter to Evans laying out similar arguments, as well as Cox’s personal apology for some of tense words exchanged during the dispute.…

Utah LG Spencer Cox extends olive branch to GOP Chair James Evans, explains state’s SB 54 legal position

Can a soft answer turn away wrath? In a letter yesterday, Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox responded to a letter from Utah Republican Party Chair James Evans with an apology and an explanation of the state’s legal position on SB 54 issues. In the letter to Cox, sent earlier this month, Evans requested that the LG’s office identify differences of opinion regarding the application of SB 54. The exchange of letters comes in the wake of a court decision allowing the Republican Party to close the Primary to unaffiliated voters.…

Observations on the 2015 Utah GOP Organizing Convention

Some general thoughts and reactions to the events at the Utah GOP convention on August 15, 2015: People who paid $25,000 were allowed to speak for eight minutes before the main body of the convention. The speakers were Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, Senator Mike Lee, Governor Gary Herbert, and Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson, who plans to challenge Herbert in the primary in 2016. Johnson had this odd moment when he asked people to text to a number if they wanted him and Herbert to have a series of debates or…

A Terrible Negotiating Strategy: the Utah Republican Party goes all or nothing on SB 54

I love the Caucus/Convention system. I began at the grassroots level 25 years ago. I have served in virtually every grassroots position in the Republican Party. I’ve been Chair of the Utah Republican Party and Chair of the Utah County Republican Party. I continue to serve today as a Legislative District Chair. I’ll put my grassroots credentials up against anyone’s. I want our Caucus/Convention system to survive. Just three years ago, Count My Vote (CMV) was formed by Utah political power brokers demanding changes to Utah’s Caucus/Convention system. Direct primaries…

The James Evans SB 54 survey: purity panels, purging and pay-to-play

Purity panels ala the Politiburo

UPDATE: Take the survey online RIGHT HERE. The James Evans SB 54 survey is out (find the full survey at the bottom). Included are a number of proposals – like purity panels and removal from the party. A number of those proposals have made the news with headlines like “Beehive McCarthyism” and “GOP Politburo needs to trust its voters.” The survey – more than a day late and a dollar short – is to “assess the opinions and wishes of Utah Republicans” – after being quite public about some very bad proposals. Having some questions…
