Trump resistance in Utah gets girl-powered

It popped up during lunch. The slide featured a quote from film actor Jeffrey Wright: “May the election of Trump bring forth the fiercest, smartest, toughest generation of ass-kicking women this country could possibly imagine.” Utah Indivisible and Utahns Speak Out, the latter of which challenged its federal representatives Feb. 24 at its Town Hall for All, are organizations that are part of the larger resistance across America to President Donald Trump. Now, the Beehive State’s movement is getting a female flavor. Rise Up & March On was a function…

Senator Dabakis silences hundreds of San Juan County citizens

Utah State Senator Jim Dabakis posted the following picture on his Facebook page on August 5, 2016. Dabakis states that US Senator Mike Lee conjured up this picture to scare his “MINIONS” in to demanding “NO MONUMENT”. Citizens of San Juan County who are being directly affected by the monument if designated began to reply to Dabakis post. As comments were posted opposing the National Monument or questioning Dabakis about the so-called “Lee” photo they were deleted and the person making the post was blocked from his page. For example…

Fact Check: Senator Dabakis was against expanding Medicaid before he was for it

It’s hard to tell whether Senator Jim Dabakis thinks no one is paying attention to his voting history or just if he just flat-out doesn’t remember his own votes. The Governor’s self-imposed July 31 deadline is approaching for an announcement of a plan to address the gap in Utahns’ healthcare coverage (to be called Healthy Utah Utah Cares Utah Elevates*…because it goes well with the license plates, right?), and some legislative leaders are promising it will be better than ever. But “better than ever” is not good enough for Senator Jim Dabakis, who still wants full…

Jim Dabakis: Salt Lake Tribune to be sold

A number of reports from different sources are saying there will soon be a new owner for the Salt Lake Tribune. Reportedly, the paper is losing money and its owner, the New York Hedge Fund, Alden Global Capital is ready to dump the Tribune. It is not market conditions that have turned the Tribune unprofitable. It’s because the Trib’s Hedge Fund owner and Deseret News Publishing came to an agreement in the fall of 2013. The deal called for Tribune to stop getting its traditional 58% take from the papers…

When is a tax increase not a tax increase? When Jim Dabakis gets involved.

I know I probably pick on Jim Dabakis more than I should, though I don’t think it has yet approached Unicorn-Doug Wright levels. But dang does he make it easy. You can almost count on him making claims that are entirely untrue to score some political points on, well, just about anything. His latest op-ed on education funding isn’t any different. For starters, he gets a basic fact wrong. “High school graduation rates have plunged”, he claims, yet stories from 2012, 2013, and 2014 all cite improving graduation rates in Utah…

Jim Dabakis: After tap dancing for 2 years, just take Medicaid expansion!

Utah, quit stalling. Take full Medicaid Expansion. ‘The Gang of Six’ Republicans (Gov Herbert, Lt Gov Cox, Senate President Niederhauser, House Speaker Hughes, Senator Shiozawa and Rep Dunnigan) are deciding who will live and who will die. They are negotiating on whether the state should accept Medicaid Expansion–or not. They are taking their sweet time. The Medicaid Expansion decision is the biggest single issue to face the state in a generation and our state seems paralyzed, unable to make a decision. The reason this is taking so long is not because this…

Utah gerrymandering and its consequences are very real

To argue gerrymandering does not exist in Utah flies in the face of many Utah Republican and Democratic leaders who admitted to gerrymandering during the 2011 process. To now accuse Senator James Dabakis of lying when he accuses Republicans of gerrymandering is saying they all lied. The difference is Dabakis is aggravated with the outcome. Otherwise, most of Utah’s legislators have been tooth-picking their teeth over a job well done. Most selected the voters they wanted. I followed Utah’s Legislature and Legislative Redistricting Committee through 2011, attending perhaps 20 meetings.…
