Utah Democrats don’t want to win

It was a little jarring to review my ballot for Iron County and see so many unopposed races. My state senator didn’t have any opponent. My representative had a third-party opponent which is almost the same thing. Aside from a couple of write-in candidates (neither of whom broke 20%), all of the county races were unopposed. After having to make a lot of careful choices and analysis from living in major metro areas like Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, it didn’t sit well with me to have so few…

The HubCap Spin | Love or Owens: Who Wins the Race for Congressional District 4?

HubCap Spins: Where the Rubber Meets the Road is a collaborative effort of Utah Political Capital (UPC) and Utah Politico Hub (the Hub). One person from each site answers a question about upcoming races, elections, and issues. Last week we looked at the Utah Attorney General race; today we turn to the Fourth Congressional District. Does Doug Owens Have a Narrow Path to Victory?

It’s easy for us Republicans to prognosticate Mia Love’s imminent election  to Congress. After a decade of Matheson and numerous futile campaigns to unseat him, we have a nationally popular candidate with a great story and a great campaign team. Victory  appears to be on the horizon. But, as Darth Vader once warned an overconfident Imperial Admiral, it might be worth remembering to not be too proud of what we’ve created. A small band of devoted individuals could still blow everything up. Whether Utah Democrats have that small band of devoted…

Five Signs Doug Owens Doesn’t Plan on Winning

Democrat Doug Owens is running for Congress in Utah’s Fourth Congressional District. Or at least he is on paper. In real life, it looks like another thing.  Whether he’s wowing us with his pie-making skills or telling us that the chaos in his campaign has been the plan all along, the Owens campaign seems doomed. And that’s all without even mentioning his opponent (Mia Love), her party affiliation (Republican) in a Republican leaning district, or her monetary advantage (she’s raised more than any challenger or candidate for any open Congressional seat in this…

BUZZ: Doug Owens Seeks Campaign Manager

Doug Owens for Congress needs a campaign manager Posted by the Utah Democratic Party on Work Forward, the campaign seeks “an aggressive, innovative, committed, and hardworking campaign manager” to run the campaign to be defeated by Republican Mia Love   of the Democratic nominee in Utah’s Fourth Congressional District. The listing doesn’t mention why the previous manager, Emily Hollingshead, has left the campaign. Among other things, the listing notes Owens Ivy League credentials and suggests high name ID due to his father’s time in Congress (from 1973 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1993).…
