An interview with Jonathan Johnson, candidate for the Republican nomination for Utah governor

Jonathan Johnson is challenging Gov. Gary Herbert for the 2016 Republican nomination for governor. At an invitation from Utah Politico Hub,  the CEO over Overstock.com was gracious enough to take the time to answer a wide variety of questions. Despite some technical issues (the camera is stuck on Johnson the entire time and there were early audio issues), we had an interesting conversation about Johnson’s history, policy proposals, and why he wants to be Utah’s next governor.

Hire JJ? Notes from a conversation with gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Johnson

I recently had a one hour conversation with Jonathan Johnson who is running against Governor Gary Herbert to be the 2016 Republican nominee for Governor. I was invited to ask him anything regarding his run for office. Before I get into details I want to note that I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. He was gracious, candid, and very likeable. I enjoyed getting to know him. As I thought about what I would ask him I reviewed two posts I’ve written on selecting candidates for office: “Questions for Candidates that Won’t…

An interview with Jonathan Johnson on leadership

You can find an audio recording of John Mulholland’s interview of Jonathan Johnson at the bottom of the post. I went to the campaign kickoff for Jonathan Johnson eager to learn why he was running for governor. I knew he had held some top positions with Overstock and wanted to listen to him speak. He gave the standard political talk but what was different was that he handed out a book and asked people to read it called Leadocracy. I found a version on Audible and over the next week…

Herbert starts the race for 2016 with a commanding lead over Johnson

Perhaps one of the more interesting races coming up this next election cycle is for the nomination for Governor of Utah. Utah Democrats don’t have a chance of winning state-wide office anytime in the near future. Neither Sean Reyes, John Dougall, or Richard Ellis (Utah’s AG, Auditor, and Treasurer, respectively) look like they have serious in-party challengers (or challengers at all). That leaves only Gary Herbert, governor since 2009, has a rival for the Republican Party’s nomination. That rival–Overstock.com chairman Jonathan Johnson–has his work cut out for him. It will pit Herbert’s “gut conservative” style…

The Mero Moment: Jonathan Johnson – September 3, 2015

Now that libertarian businessman Jonathan Johnson has formally announced his intention to run for governor in 2016, it’s fair to take a look at the candidate, compare him to his competition, match him against mainstream Utah values and address his competency as a political leader. Johnson is up against a tough act. Governor Gary Herbert is leading this state exceptionally well. Working effectively in tandem with the state Legislature, Governor Herbert has had a prudent hand on the helm of state. The Utah economy continues to boom – meaning, with…
