The Mormon problem with Planned Parenthood

The push to defund Planned Parenthood is not new. As the nation’s largest provider of abortions today, Planned Parenthood has been under attack since eugenicist Margaret Sanger breathed life into it in 1916. It began as her effort at population control. She figured that if “inferior” people could be convinced (or forced) to stop having children, humanity’s future would be bright. This was the beginning of what we, conservatives, refer to as a “culture of death” – a culture in which preventing and ending life is of higher priority than…

The LDS Church says ‘goodbye’ to (a part of) the Boy Scouts

In what was sad but not necessarily unexpected news the LDS Church announced today that beginning January 1, 2018, they will no longer be using the Boy Scouts’ Varsity and Venturing programs for their youth activities. Initial thoughts – It’s just scouting for the 14-18-year-old young men that’s being dropped. Cub scouts and 11-13-year-old scouts are still around for the time being, though replacements for those are in the works as well. The change will take effect next January, but if older boys still want to work towards the Eagle…

Mormon Church clarifies revelation declaring Donald Trump as ‘Antichrist’

Less than 24 hours after a controversial revelation declaring Donald Trump as the Anti-Christ was leaked to the media, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) has clarified its position on the Republican presidential candidate’s role in the End of Days. “There have been erroneous reports that President Thomas S. Monson has received revelation that Donald Trump was the Anti-Christ and therefore, Armageddon is upon us,” Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a press release. “Pres. Monson will be delivering the full wording of the revelation…

The LDS Church trumps Trump

Fox 13 is reporting that after inquires to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding Donald Trump’s call for the US to block Muslims from entering the US, the LDS Church has issued a statement emphasizing religious freedom. The full press release from the LDS Church: SALT LAKE CITY —  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is neutral in regard to party politics and election campaigns. However, it is not neutral in relation to religious freedom. The following statements by Joseph Smith from 1841 and 1843 are consistent with the Church’s position…

Midday Commentary on Last Night’s News — Nov. 10, 2015

I’m always one for a great play on words, but “Family Homo Evening“? Reasonably clever, sure. But it just continues to show that the The Pride Center and Equality Utah can’t help but shoot themselves in the foot. The mainstreaming of all gender attractions is the only thing that will ever work, not the “freak out the Brethren” approach the two organizations often use. There are a lot of really good questions being asked about the new policy, and it will surely create a bigger mess than church leadership counted on.…

How to Send a Mixed Message with Your LDS Outreach

Given the very large majorities in Utah, it’s not terribly surprising that state political parties would invest a lot of time and energy into doing outreach to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). What is surprising is how badly they can sometimes do it. Remember when James Evans, chair of the Utah Republican Party, decided to hold a press conference on Sunday afternoon, smack dab in the middle of church services for many LDS faithful? Well, that boner seems pretty mild compared to what the Salt…

LDS Dems and Others Launch Progressive Mormon Blog

Today, the LDS Democrats announced that, in conjunction with Mormons for Obama, LDS Dems of America, Mormon Democrats, and Mormon Liberals, they are launching a new progressive, politically-oriented blog, MormonPress, which will  aggregate their content and invite guest submissions. According to Aaron White of Mormon Democrats, the purpose of MormonPress is to dispel the common perception that a good Mormon has to be a conservative Republican:  “There is a common myth in Mormon culture that posits you can’t be politically progressive and a faithful Latter-day Saint. . . . MormonPress will…

The Militarization of the Tolerance Police

Earlier this week I sent out a tweet highlighting the fact that somebody at BYU messed up and put cards celebrating same sex marriage out in the BYU Store. Similar to other mixups that have occurred at the University over the years (like the run on a vending machine selling caffeinated Coke last year), I found humor in the situation. Others didn’t, to the point that it actually hit the mainstream media.

BUZZ: LDS Family Services Getting Out of the Adoption Business

In a barely-concluded press conference, the LDS church announced today that they are transitioning (quickly) out of adoption services. Beginning August 1, LDS Family Services will become a counseling service for single expectant parents but will no longer be involved in placing children. Birth families and pre-adoptive families currently in the system will have until Dec 31 to complete their adoptions, according to a letter issued  today. The official reason given is a drop-off in adoptions occurring in recent years. However, the current political climate makes this move unsurprising. Letter…
