Utahns Dislike Trump, Would Still Elect Him Over Clinton

A recently released Utah Voter Poll showed that Utahns have a low opinion of Donald Trump, but they’d still vote for him 54-46 over Hillary Clinton. Trump has a net favorability rating of -51, but Clinton’s own net rating (-41) is also low and shows that most voters would rather vote for someone they don’t like from their own party than someone from the other party. Respondents identified as 55% Republican, 30% Democrat, and 15% as Independent or Other. For Utah’s senators, Mike Lee had a +3 rating (49-46) and…

GOP 2016: The Post-Debate Iowa Polls

The national polls are fluctuating but this time I wanted to focus on Iowa. Since the GOP Debate, the number in Iowa have moved around. Here’s where things stood based on the average of the two most recent Iowa polls before the debate. 1. Donald Trump – 24% 2. Scott Walker – 17% 3. Jeb Bush – 11% 4. Ben Carson – 6.5% 4. Mike Huckabee – 6.5% 6. Ted Cruz – 5% 7. Bobby Jindal – 4% 8. John Kasich – 3.5% 8. Marco Rubio – 3.5% 10. Rand…

Were the GOP Debate questions fair?

Donald Trump may have had the most personal questions, but he had the most questions, period. Fox News did what moderators on any other network could not do: ask tough questions zeroing in on the weaknesses of every candidate. Anderson Cooper asks the same question, and it’s a gotcha question. If anything, Fox News raised the bar for Democrats when they have their first debate cleeeeear in October. If I had a main criticism of the questions, and for the most part I was pleased, it was that they spent…

#GOPDebate Transcript – Mike Huckabee’s Questions & Answers

CHRIS WALLACE: Governor Huckabee, like Governor Walker, you have staked out strong positions on social issues. You favor a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. You favor a constitutional amendment banning abortions, except for the life of the mother. Millions of people in this country agree with you, but according to the polls, and again this an electability question, according to the polls, more people don’t, so how do you persuade enough Independents and Democrats to get elected in 2016? MIKE HUCKABEE: Chris, I disagree with the idea that the…

A Tale of Two GOP Debates

Yesterday, the top 17 candidates for the Republican nomination held two debates on Fox News. The earlier afternoon GOP debate felt like a true punishment, performing in an empty auditorium and with the B-team moderators of Bill Hemmer and Martha McCallum. The prime-time debate between the top 10 candidates had a packed house, the A-team of Chris Wallace and Megyn Kelly (and the B+ tag-along Bret Baier), and the star-power curiosity of Donald Trump meant record ratings. The afternoon debate featured former Texas governor Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania senator Rick…

Preview of the Fox News GOP Debate

The two line-ups are set for the Fox News/Facebook GOP Debate this Thursday. The 7pm MST debate will feature Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chris Christie and John Kasich. The earlier 3pm MST debate would have featured Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal and Carly Fiorina, but since FNS dropped their 1% threshold rule, they will also be joined by Lindsey Graham, George Pataki and Jim Gilmore. The prime-time debate is two hours and the afternoon debate is one…

Grading Presidential Candidate Logos

The world of presidential candidate logos has shifted since 2004. Barack Obama changed everything with his remarkable O logo and that is now the benchmark that everything else is judged against. With that in mind, I thought I’d take a look at all the logos for announced presidential candidates this year and give them a letter grade, from A to F. A Hillary’s logo has had all kinds of press already, but suffice it to say I like it. It’s the most iconic of any of the logos, and in that…

Election 2016 GOP Power Rankings – June 2015

I’d been looking at BetFair for power rankings in months’ past, but I’m turning more to the national polling now that there’s a deadline. The ten Republicans have two months to get their poll numbers up to make it into that first Fox News debate. I took the latest polls from ABC, CNN, FoxNews, and Quinnipiac and averaged them together for a national snapshot: 1. Jeb Bush – 11.25% 2. Scott Walker – 10.75% 3. Marco Rubio – 10.25% 4. Ben Carson – 9% 5. Rand Paul – 8.75% 5.…

Who Should Be the Ten Republicans at the First Fox News Debate?

The first Republican presidential debate for Election 2016 will take place on Fox News on August 6. They have stated that they will only allow the candidates who finish in the top ten on average of the five most recent national polls. This means that some credible candidates who don’t happen to be polling well in summer could miss the stage while more unserious challengers would get the air time. It’s difficult to keep track of who has officially declared they’re running vs. those we know will, but they need…
