Preview of the Fox News GOP Debate

The two line-ups are set for the Fox News/Facebook GOP Debate this Thursday. The 7pm MST debate will feature Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chris Christie and John Kasich. The earlier 3pm MST debate would have featured Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal and Carly Fiorina, but since FNS dropped their 1% threshold rule, they will also be joined by Lindsey Graham, George Pataki and Jim Gilmore. The prime-time debate is two hours and the afternoon debate is one…

Leaderless Culture: Why Scott Walker will be the 2016 loser

America in 2015 is all about smartphones and clickbait, a degeneratively autistic culture. The promiscuous fascination with novelty has reached the political sphere. The political primaries, overweighting the political nerds as they do, were supposed to be an exemption from this! I am told that this is about authenticity, the raw realism of angry old men cutting through the focus group tested mush in a world of dozens of public relations spinners for every real journalist. They are leading some real, populist anger, I am told. Well. There is no…

Election 2016 GOP Power Rankings – July 2015

We still have the first Fox News debate looming where only those who finish in the top ten in the last five national polls. I took the two most recent national polls and the latest Iowa poll and averaged them to give an idea how these candidates are doing. 1. Donald Trump – 16% 2. Scott Walker – 15% 3. Jeb Bush – 11.67% 4. Ben Carson – 6% 5. Ted Cruz – 5.67% 5. Rand Paul – 5.67% 5. Marco Rubio – 5.67% 8. Mike Huckabee – 4.67% 9.…

Grading Presidential Candidate Logos

The world of presidential candidate logos has shifted since 2004. Barack Obama changed everything with his remarkable O logo and that is now the benchmark that everything else is judged against. With that in mind, I thought I’d take a look at all the logos for announced presidential candidates this year and give them a letter grade, from A to F. A Hillary’s logo has had all kinds of press already, but suffice it to say I like it. It’s the most iconic of any of the logos, and in that…

Don’t worry; Donald Trump will not win the GOP nomination

I’ve started ten different stories on Donald Trump over the past month that I couldn’t bring myself to finish or publish. Do I give him more publicity than he’s already receiving? Eh, why not. The latest Iowa Republican caucus poll (KBUR/WAA) has Trump in 7th place, with 7% of the vote. Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are all ahead of him. Put another way, 93% of Iowans polled did not pick Trump. This is also down from how he performed in Quinnipiac’s…

Election 2016 GOP Power Rankings – June 2015

I’d been looking at BetFair for power rankings in months’ past, but I’m turning more to the national polling now that there’s a deadline. The ten Republicans have two months to get their poll numbers up to make it into that first Fox News debate. I took the latest polls from ABC, CNN, FoxNews, and Quinnipiac and averaged them together for a national snapshot: 1. Jeb Bush – 11.25% 2. Scott Walker – 10.75% 3. Marco Rubio – 10.25% 4. Ben Carson – 9% 5. Rand Paul – 8.75% 5.…

Who Should Be the Ten Republicans at the First Fox News Debate?

The first Republican presidential debate for Election 2016 will take place on Fox News on August 6. They have stated that they will only allow the candidates who finish in the top ten on average of the five most recent national polls. This means that some credible candidates who don’t happen to be polling well in summer could miss the stage while more unserious challengers would get the air time. It’s difficult to keep track of who has officially declared they’re running vs. those we know will, but they need…

The race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination has at least three official candidates, and about eight more that we know are going to run, but they’re still playing this flirting game.
