Observations on the 2015 Utah GOP Organizing Convention

Some general thoughts and reactions to the events at the Utah GOP convention on August 15, 2015: People who paid $25,000 were allowed to speak for eight minutes before the main body of the convention. The speakers were Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, Senator Mike Lee, Governor Gary Herbert, and Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson, who plans to challenge Herbert in the primary in 2016. Johnson had this odd moment when he asked people to text to a number if they wanted him and Herbert to have a series of debates or…

Midday Commentary on Last Night’s News — July 30, 2015

I know it’s summer and all, but surely there’s some political news out there somewhere that doesn’t start with #NotTheOnion and ends with Donald Trump. Scraping the bottom of the barrel: • Sen. Hatch is drowning in Benjamins. People are asking what that means. I’m not quite sure why, because anyone who has even dipped their toes in the waters of the Orrin Hatch Swimming Pool of Political Aspirations knows that he’s not coming out until he’s belly up. With $1.5 million already in his account: “You can’t even give…

The Planned Parenthood videos keep hitting, and with each, the conversation becomes more awkward and difficult, for pro-life and pro-choice advocates alike. Now, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes says his office has received calls to investigate Planned Parenthood for wrong doing. While he did not comment on any investigation, in a statement to Utah Politico Hub, Reyes said that Planned Parenthood’s attitude in the videos was “cavalier and dehumanizing.” “My office has ethical obligations not to comment on our investigations or even whether one is taking place. “However, I can…

The Price of Being an Elected Official

Have you seen the political news lately? Attorney General Sean Reyes has been accepting funding for his next campaign. Marco Rubio got four speeding tickets over the last 18 years. Hillary Clinton isn’t talking to reporters. Representative Ken Ivory is advocating for his American Lands Council and local control of public lands to other states. Welcome to the summer of 2015. None of the above stories are particularly newsworthy, but lets not let important issues get in the way of a good story. In slow news months some reporters seem…

Polling shows Herbert and Reyes on track for reelection…so far

There’s no such thing as a sure thing in politics. But polling for Governor Gary Herbert and Attorney General Sean Reyes sure does look good right now. Polling by Dan Jones during the last month shows both Herbert and Reyes pulling down more than 50% support for reelection. While Herbert does slightly better among Republicans than Reyes (70% of GOPers want Herbert reelected to 62% for Reyes), the AG out paces the Governor among Democrats. Only 30% of Ds think Herbert should get a second term in the Governors mansion, while Reyes…

Eight Stories Getting More News Coverage Than Justin Miller

You’d think that the story of a sitting member of the Utah House of Representatives embezzling a good $34K from one of the state’s brightest political stars would end up creating an endless stream of front page news. Instead, the Utah media got in their initial stories and have been almost entirely silent. Even folks like Paul Rolly and Pat Bagley who delight in poking powerful people in the eye have been keeping their mouths shut (because I suppose it’s only interesting if a Republican does it). But, apparently, other…
