Senator Mike Lee and anti-trust policy: Third time a charm?

Senator Mike Lee’s third foray into anti-trust policy has finally hit the mark. Teaming up with Democrat Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, from their position as Chairman and Ranking Minority Member of the Antitrust Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee, the two have in the past launched assaults on proposed or threatened mergers in the prescription drug and beer industries. In neither of those cases is there the slightest chance of “monopoly,” in any meaningful sense of the term (and savor the irony of Utah’s junior Senator concerned about possible increases in…

Tribute to Governor Olene Walker A Woman of Many Firsts Because of Her Commitment to Principles that Last Mr. President, I rise today to pay tribute to Governor Olene Walker, Utah’s 15th Governor, who passed away on Saturday November 28, 2015 at the age of 85. She was the first woman to serve as Utah’s Governor, worked as Lieutenant Governor for over 11 years and was a member of the Utah legislature for eight years. Olene Walker will be remembered and revered by Utahns – not because of the many…

Senator Mike Lee: a case of committee staff capture?

In a recent post, I expressed some disappointment with Senator Mike Lee for joining Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota in “jawboning” attacks on U.S. companies Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Walgreens, and Rite Aid, for contemplated mergers. I considered them as inconsistent with out junior Senator’s professed antipathy to government interference in the private marketplace. Today I would like to suggest a possible explanation for his deviance from professed principle: committee staff capture. I hasten to admit that I do not have the foggiest idea if this explanation is accurate. I know nothing…

Senator Mike Lee joins the “Jawboners”

Senator Mike Lee’s libertarian phase is officially over. It didn’t even last a full term in Washington. Twice in the last month Lee has joined regulatory hard-liner Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota (lifetime American Conservative Union rating of 6%) in jaw-boning American companies over mergers. “Jawboning” is the use of veiled threats by government officials to get their way without the messiness of legislation or official regulatory action. These threats usually come in the form of letters to private companies or press releases parading horribles, or (usually) both. On Tuesday the 24th…

Utah’s Idea Factory [UPH Wire]

October 02, 2015 A few weeks ago, I joined with the Salt Lake Chamber, the Utah Technology Council, and the Utah Manufacturers Association to host the Second Annual Utah Solutions Summit. The theme of this year’s Summit was “Utah’s Idea Factory” – a way to engage in the kind of innovative dialogue that makes Utah a special place, and America an extraordinary success. I am grateful to the many participants and attendees who joined with me to make this an extraordinary event. “Utah’s Idea Factory” featured a group of…

The art of real leadership

I’m tired of it. I bet you are too. I’m tired of the screaming and name-calling that is happening in the public square. I’m tired of people afraid to speak truth because they know they’ll be flayed for it. I’m tired of people calling for “purity panels” on one hand and who talk of expanding their political party on the other. Really?? Who would want to join a party like that? The cognitive dissonance or deliberate tone-deafness required to even go there is mind-boggling. There is far too much lecturing…
