UTGOP Applauds Favorable Recommendation of Legislative Fix to Plurality Issue
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Republican Party Chairman James Evans released the following statement after House Government Operations Committee’s favorable recommendation on HB313 (1st Sub), which addresses the plurality issue in the primary resulting from the enactment of SB54 (the Utah Legislature/Count My Vote compromise):”As Speaker Hughes has stated, ‘plurality was always going to be an issue that the legislature would come back and address. We need to get this resolved before the 2016 election cycle,'” said Chairman James Evans. “Rep. Marc Roberts’ bill, HB313 (1st Sub) addresses this issue by requiring that a candidate become a party’s nominee by securing a majority vote. In the event that a candidate comes out of a primary with less than 50 % of the vote, the nomination decision would be referred back to the party. This is a fair, democratic way of ensuring that every vote truly does count.”

“I’m saddened that Count My Vote is wielding the threat of restarting the initiative petition because of HB313 (1st Sub) when it clearly had nothing to do with the compromise. In essence, they are dishonoring their own stance that a ‘deal is a deal.'”
